Jennifer “Jen” Knies is one of our experienced military veterans. As a retired US Army JAG Officer and combat veteran, Jen possesses an in-depth knowledge of military law, as well as a unique understanding of the challenges military members and their families face during divorce and parenting disputes. She has litigated hundreds of criminal cases and has years of experience in dealing with military commanders on behalf of service members.
Jen has over fourteen years of experience as an Army JAG attorney. She is a recognized expert in the areas of sexual assault and crimes against children. Jen’s passion is for protecting the interests of her clients and achieving the best possible outcome for them.
Jen has trained extensively in all areas of domestic relations law. She is a certified Child and Family Investigator, Parenting Coordinator and Decision Maker, and Mediator. Her knowledge and experience in these areas allow her to provide her clients with expert advice regarding parenting time disputes and other family law matters.
Jen is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point and the Marshall-Wythe School of Law at the College of William and Mary. She also earned a Master of Laws in Criminal Law from the Judge Advocate General’s Legal Center and School.

Responsible for managing all Rule of Law Issues for the 4-star General Commander of ISAF and US Forces. Collaborated with many agencies, such as Afghan National Security Directorate, National Security Prosecutors, Ministry of Justice and Supreme Court. Advised on military detentions and high-level investigations. Developed and implemented a program to pair Judge Advocates with Afghan prosecutors, allowing more effective case development to prosecute insurgents in Afghan courts. Commended by the Afghan Attorney General for first-ever, successful prosecutions of captured insurgents at the National Detention Facility.

Personally interviewed dozens of victims and reviewed thousands of rape/sexual assault allegations and investigations; created a comprehensive database and earned recognition as subject matter expert. Served as Lead Drafter of the final report to Congress and Secretary of Defense. Drafted proposed legislation to support sweeping changes to the Military Justice System’s Rape Statute.

Prosecuted all general and special courts martial in the area. Acted as Special Assistant US Attorney for the US Attorney’s Office and Field Screening Officer for the JAG Corps. Mentored and trained new prosecutors in handling highly difficult cases in a fair and timely manner. Personally tried several fully contested rape and child sex abuse cases; ranked as a subject matter expert in prosecuting in these areas. As Special Assistant US Attorney, tried over 50 misdemeanor and felony cases in Federal District Court. Investigated and negotiated favorable settlements in over 60 Tort and Medical Malpractice cases, including the dismissal of a $10 million lawsuit and a $2.5 million case settled for under $180,000.
